With the fall of Saigon in April of 1975, the North Vietnamese had successfully defeated South Vietnamese forces. This leads to the eventual rule under the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. This unification of Vietnam entirely unjustified the US's support in Vietnam as it essentially resulted in nothing but defeat. The lasting effects of the Vietnam War questioned the US government's role in getting involved in external conflicts in the future that will have little effect on the country.
