Funerals held for Simpson, Goldman

LOS ANGELES, June 16 -- "Separate services were held Thursday for the ex-wife of former NFL great O.J. Simpson and a friend who were stabbed to death outside Nicole Brown Simpson's luxury condomimum.

O.J. Simpson attended services for his ex-wife at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Brentwood along with family, sports figures and friends. He walked into the service holding the hands of his 9-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son by Nicole, and knelt to kiss his son before entering the church.

Nicole Brown Simpson, 35, was buried in an Orange County cemetery.

A standing room only crowd attended services for waiter and model Ronald Lyle Goldman, 25, at Valley Oaks Memorial Park in Westlake Village, just north of Los Angeles.

Goldman had stopped at Nicole Simpson's Brentwood condominium Sunday night to return a pair of prescription sunglasses she had left at the restaurant where he worked as a waiter. The pair were stabbed to death outside the home and a passerby found their bodies early Monday morning.

The Los Angeles Times reported Thursday that the blood type in samples taken at the scene of the double slaying matches that of O.J. Simpson's blood. The paper cited unidentified police sources as saying that the blood was different from those of the victims.

A more exact test to determine whether genetic material in the blood sample matches Simpson's had not been concluded, the newspaper said. Such tests, which are highly accurate, typically take as long as two months to conduct.

Simpson was questioned for several hours following the killings after blood was found in the driveway of his Brentwood district home 2 miles from the crime scene. A bloody glove matching one found at the scene of the killings was also found outside Simpson's house.

Simpson was released and has not been charged.

The 46-year-old former NFL star claims he was at home waiting for a limousine to take him to the airport for a flight to a Chicago business meeting when his ex-wife and Goldman were killed.

Quoting unidentified sources, media reports claim Simpson is the main suspect in the investigation. Police, however, have officially declined to confirm those reports.

Meanwhile, police scoured Thursday a small, wooded area next to the Chicago hotel that O.J. Simpson checked into early Monday morning.

Los Angeles and Chicago investigators used metal detection equipment to search the square-mile area near O'Hare International Airport. They were acting on a tip from a caller who said they had seen someone resembling Simpson in the woods about the time he was in Chicago.

Simpson pleaded no contest in 1989 to misdemeanor spousal battery for an attack in which he threatened to kill his wife as he was hitting her. The couple divorced in 1992, but friends say they were trying to reconcile.

Simpson, whose full name is Orenthal James Simpson, won the Heisman Trophy as the nation's best college football player in 1968 and went on to an extraordinary 11-year career in the National Football League, where he rushed for more than 11,000 yards for Buffalo and the San Francisco 49ers. He was the league's Most Valuable Player in 1973 when he ran for a record 2,003 yard."
