CAUSES
- Edwin and Morcar had both had their Earldoms reduced under William's control
- William promised Edwin that he could marry his daughter, however this never happened
- A social hierarchy began to be formed against the Anglo-Saxons under William's rule. Castles were built and paid for by the Anglo-Saxon local community, etc

EVENTS
- When the revolt began, William sent a private army up to Northumbria and Mercia.
- William captured Warwick and Nottingham, therefore Edwin and Morcar surrendered as this would pose as a threat to their military security
- Other revolts begun against the Marcher Earldoms

OUTCOMES
- Edwin and Morcar were welcomed back into William's court
- Edgar the Aethling escaped to Scotland
