On April 21, 1836, six weeks after the battle of the Alamo, the Texans returned to battle with the Mexicans once more. With Sam Houston as leader, the Texans defeated Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jancinto. They killed 630 of Santa Anna's soldiers in 18 minutes and they successfully captures Santa Anna. After the Texans got him to sign the Treaty of Velasco, which granted Texas independence, thye set him free. In September of 1836, Houston became the president of the Republic of Texas, also known as the "Lone Star Republic."
