As a resonce to the naval raids by the Romans, Arab raid into Anatolia of 670 deeply into the Diocese of Pontus, and reaching to Pessinius. There the forty thousand Romans faced off against twenty-thousand Arabs. Anastasius' encirclement attempt failed in the face of the more experienced Arab soldiers, but the Arabs still forced to withdraw the field in defeat, and retreated out of Anatolia.
