In August of 1976 Renée Richards sued the United States Tennis Association. She was a tennis player playing in the U.S. She played on the Men's team until she transitioned from Richard Raskind to Renée Richards. She underwent gender affirming surgery. She wanted to play professional tennis but the United States Tennis Association (USTA) wouldn't let her play professionally. They made it so that you had to take a chromosome to see if you were "actuality" male or female. The Judge said "When an individual such as plaintiff, a successful physician, a husband and father, finds it necessary for her own mental sanity to undergo a sex reassignment, the unfounded fears and misconceptions of defendants must give way to the overwhelming medical evidence that this person is now female." She sucsullfeully sued the USTA
