The Republican nominee was George Bush for President and Dan Quayle for Vice President vs. Democratic nominee Michael Dukakis for President and Lloyd Bentsen for Vice President. Bush promised to fight illiteracy, bigotry, and homelessness, while Dukakis vowed to balance the budget, decrease defense spending, and not fund the Contras. Bush carried 40 states with 426 electoral votes to 10 states and 112 electoral votes for Dukakis. 85% of Reagan supporters voted for Bush.
