19 nov 1794 anni - Jay's Treaty
Descrizione:
A treaty proposed by John Jay that sought to resolve tensions between Great Britain and the United States.
The treaty called for three key points:
- Withdrawal of British occupation in the Northwest Territory
- End discrimination against American commerce
- Grant U.S. trading privileges in England and the British East Indies
It addressed few U.S. interests, ultimately granting Great Britain additional rights, which made it unpopular and controversial in the American public.
The French interpreted the treaty as a violation of the Treaty of Amity and Commerce signed in 1778. In response, the French seized and attacked many American merchant ships, and this would lead to the XYZ Affair under President John Adams.
