Tony Blair's Labour party returns to national governance after more than 15 years in opposition. Blair had taken the party away from the left, and effectively the Labour party came to operate as amped up Liberal Democrats. Centrist economic policy in combination with liberal social policy and rather hawkish foreign policy remain fixtures of Labour even today. Margaret Thatcher is alleged to have claimed that the official denunciation of socialism as part of the party platform of Labour was her greatest political achievement.
