Leader of the Soviet Union for the past 18 years, Leonid Brezhnev, passes away after a series of strokes that left him severely debilitated. Brezhnev is briefly succeeded by the reformist minded head of the KGB, Yuri Andropov, before he dies several months letter and is succeeded by the conservative Konstantin Chernenko. Chernenko also ultimately dies and is succeeded by Mikhail Gorbachev. The latter part of the Brezhnev period oversaw an economic stagnation as Soviet incomes became overly reliant on hydrocarbon exports and continued overinvestment in heavy industry and defense spending led to low levels of economic growth.
