In Britain, a large scale series of strikes held by public and private sector employees over lagging wage increases in the face of inflation during the late fall and winter of 1978/79. The failure of the Labour government of James Callaghan and popular resentment towards striking workers electrified the Conservative Party, and would lead to a no confidence vote and subsequent general election that saw an overwhelming victory for Margaret Thatcher's Conservative party.
