- Many states of the 13 colonies wrote constitutions of their own
- Some offered to ratify by popular vote (Maryland, Pennsylvannia, and North Carolina)
- The right to a jury trial, the freedom of religion
- Separation of powers: legislative powers, executive powers, and judicial powers
- voting: the right to vote was extended to all white males (property requirement)
- higher property qualification for office holding
