With the Muslim Seljuk Turks halting wealthy Christian pilgrimages to the Holy Land in 1062 CE, Pope Urban II issues the call at the Council of Claremont for a crusade to reclaim the Holy Land, especially Jerusalem. All who answered the call, should they die in the effort, would be granted immediate forgiveness for all sins.

In the Council of Claremont, Pope Urban II called to retake the Holy Land (especially Jerusalem) from the Seljuk Turks, because they had been stopping pilgrimages there. The Pope said that anyone who died in battle gets all their sins forgiven
