4 gen 1965 anni - The Watts Riot
Descrizione:
After accomplishing much for African American voting, the civil rights movement changed its focus again to address economic and social inequality for African Americans across the U.S. Although many laws and acts were passed to help end segregation, urban centers avoided conforming to the new laws by shutting down parks or selling businesses to private companies so African Americans could not join white privileges. Racial separation continued on despite what the laws said. While white families started to move to the suburbs, urban African communities continued to grow. The whites were frustrated that African Americans were gaining more privileges and the African Americans were getting angry over the social injustice they had to constantly face. This conflict and anger continued to build up until it finally broke loose in the summer of 1965. Police brutality angered the African Americans and lead to six days of rioting between the whites and the African Americans which became known as the Watts Riots. In the end, the riots ended with more than $40 million in property damage, 34 deaths, and about 4,000 arrests. This led the way to even more riots in the following years to come.
