1 dic 1966 anni - African Americans in Office
Descrizione:
For a long time after the Reconstruction in the U.S., African Americans were not represented or elected to political offices. Yet the cycle changed in 1966. In 1966 the first African American to join Congress since the Reconstruction was Edward Brooke of Massachusetts. Brooke began the first African American in political office, ultimately inspiring others to join. Some men who were inspired included Gary Stokes and Richard Hatcher. In 1967, Gary Stokes of Cleveland, Ohio, and Richard Hatcher of Gary, Indiana, were elected the first African American mayors of major U.S. cities. Yet the change in the south took a longer time. It took until 1992 until the next African American was elected to the senate since Brooke. It is also thanks to these individuals that the first African American president was elected in the U.S. in 2008.
