During the fight against segregation, it was determined that Birmingham had the worst treatment in the world for African Americans. So the SCLC launched a massive campaign against segregation with Martin Luther King Jr. African American residents were segregated and had fewer job opportunities with little pay than the whites. The SCLC joined with the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights to organize actions to overwhelm the city officials and put pressure on retailers. This started with counter sit-ins at downtown lunch counters and then was followed by mass meetings, marches, and boycotts of retail stores. During this event many were jailed including MLK who wrote the famous Birmingham jail letters. These letters made support for civil rights increase and drew in prominent white organizations start to chip in and help support the civil rights movement
