1 giug 1964 anni - Freedom Summer
Descrizione:
CORE, SNCC, NAACP, and other civil rights groups banded together to create a new program called the Freedom Summer. The program helped to send thousands of college students in Mississippi to register African Americans to vote and set up community centers. During June, three Freedom Summer voter registration workers disappeared from Mississippi. It was revealed two months later that police jailed the students and then notified the KKK, who ambushed the students after their release and killed the students. During the Freedom Summer the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party (MFDP) was formed. The MFDP helped to gain political power for African Americans and later pressured he Democratic leadership to seat their delegates instead of those chosen by the all-white Mississippi Democratic Party.
