Four African American college students sat at the “whites only” lunch counter at Woolworth’s in Greensboro, North Carolina. Denied service, they refused to move. The next day, they returned to the lunch counter with even more students. Less than a week later, the sit-in had spread to other cities in North Carolina, and students were taking up the same cause in states such as Florida and Virginia. Because of this event, by August 1961, about 70,000 people had participated in these demonstrations.
