In order to protest segregation, 4 African American college students sat at a lunch counter and refused to move until they were served. The sit-in spread to other cities and states such as Florida, South Carolina, and Virginia. In effect, leaders who participated in the student sit in at Shaw University formed the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Comittee. These sit ins promoting civil disobedience made Woolworths policy to allow properly dressed and well-behaved” customers at its lunch counter. Nonviolent sit-in style protests were also being held at segregated libraries, beaches, swimming pools, motels, and restaurants. By August 1961, about 70,000 people had participated in these demonstrations.
