After Brezhnev, and the quick deaths of Andropov and Chernenko, Gorbachev had no one powerful enough to question is authority and so, on March 11th, 1985, Mikhail Gorbachev took power and became the General Secretary. This event is significant because Gorbachev’s leadership would see much of the Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc see progressive reforms.
