Peru gains independence from Spain.

During Napoleon’s invasion of Spain, the people of Peru remained loyal to Spain for the most part. A general from Argentina, José de San Martín, wanted to gain control of Upper Peru’s silver and solidify his country’s independence by eliminating Spanish forces. He made it to Lima and Peru’s independence was declared on July 28, 1821. He then withdrew and Simón Bolívar defeated the remaining Spanish power in Peru.
