Colombia gains independence from Spain.

The captivity of Ferdinand VII caused New Granada to declare independence in 1810, but they remained loyal to Ferdinand until 1811. In 1819, Bolívar invaded Colombia and defeated the Spanish. The Republic of Colombia, or Gran Colombia, was formed from Colombia, Panama, Venezuela, and Ecuador. By 1835, the other countries broke away from Gran Colombia, leaving Colombia on its own.
