Haiti gains independence from France.

Toussaint Louverture gained control of Santo Domingo in 1801. He agreed to an armistice with the French but was captured in 1802. That same year, some of his lieutenants continued the war with the French. After being defeated by Jean-Jacques Dessalines at the Battle of Vertières, the French ships were evacuated with the help of the British Royal Navy. Haiti was declared independent on January 1, 1804.
