Brazil gains independence from Portugal.

Dom Pedro was appointed as regent of Brazil in 1821. Fearing that he might lead an independence movement, the Cortes of Lisbon ordered him to return. He refused and declared the independence of Brazil on September 7, 1822. He was then crowned the emperor and Portugal recognized Brazil’s independence in 1825.
