This was the State of the Union address given by President Monroe in which he declared an end to European colonization in the Americas. Although the United States was not in a position to enforce this policy at the time, it would set precedent for future foreign policy. This was backed by the British to help keep the other nations of Europe out in order to help secure mercantile trade.
