1 dic 1850 anni - African Americans in the mid-1800s summary
Descrizione:
By 1850, the population of slaves in the U.S had grown from six hundred thousand to over three million. African Americans in the mid-1800s, either free or enslaved, faced discrimination and injustice. Some slave owners in the south used harsh punishments in an attempt to control slaves, however, it didn't stop them from rebelling in numerous ways. In the South, their economy was solely based on agriculture, so whether white southerners owned slaves or not they knew their economy depended on slave labor. The living conditions of slaves were strident, working constantly. African Americans were stripped of almost every piece of their culture, expressing what they could in their own churches, through their quilts, songs, dances, and folktales.
