1 gen 1808 anni - The Movement to End slavery

Descrizione:

Even before the American Revolution, people opposed slavery. On January 1, 1808, Congress law that ended the Atlantic slave trade took effect. Even though the Northerns no longer had an interest in slaves, they still accepted them for the use of cheap cotton from the south. Abolishers were people who wanted slavery to end, but they could never agree on how. A deeply religious white man named William Lloyd Garrison spoke out on the need for slavery to end immediately, starting a fiery abolitionist newspaper, The Liberator. On August 12, 1841, Garrison attended a meeting where he heard an escaped slave speak, also known as Frederick Douglass, speak about the cruel treatment of slaves. Frederick Douglass was an abolitionist and an escaped slave, who escaped from a plantation in Maryland. He spoke at conventions about his former life in slavery, where he quickly became a leader in the abolitionist movement. He gave speeches speaking out against the cruel treatment of enslaved persons, joining the fight against slavery. He gave many speeches, wrote anti-slavery newspapers, and wrote autobiographies.
