- The cotton gin helped improve cleaning cotton. Cleaning it by hand was very difficult. A worker could clean just 1 pound a day
The cotton gin could clean up to 50 pounds of cotton a day!

Increased demand for slave labor
- Sectional disputes between free and slave states increased as slavery spread
