Within China during this time period, there had been a civil war going on since the 1930's between communist Mao Zedong and nationalist Jian Jieshi. Of course, the United States was fearful of a powerful country like China falling under a communist regime, so they provided Jieshi's army $2 billion. However, Truman soon realized that to win this war, he would have to use the United States military to do so. Unwilling to go that far, the US pulled out all aid and Mao Zedong conquered the nationalist forces and formed the People's Republic of China. Soon after, Zedong allied himself with the Soviet Union out of fear of US retaliation in some form or another. This was a very significant event, as it brought a powerful ally over to the side of the Soviet Union and left the United States in a tough spot.
