From 1974 to 1979 Good Times followed the Evans Family, a poor Black family living in one of the Chicago projects. The show is monumental for being one of the first shows on TV to highlight a poor family, and also it was America's first two parent family sitcom.

However, the show features several Black caricatures. Florida Evans is an example of a Sapphire. She is constantly mocking, berating and putting down her son J.J, and other Black men on the show, as Sapphire caricatures often do. Whenever there is a Coon caricature, there is often a Sapphire to combat him.

(A coon caracturie is a stereotype of an African American man who is lazy, ignorant, childish, and unwilling to learn or work)
