This is the first film of the Blaxploitation era. By the time of the 1970's, African Americans were tired of seeing stereotypes of themselves on screen. In order to combat this, Black filmmakers began to make independent, usually extremely low budget films starring Black characters being the heroes in every film. Though the intention of these films was to take control and create their own narrative, filmmakers ended up creating more stereotypes. Though some films had Black directors, almost all had White producers, writers, and directors. These films were still just interpretations of Black life including storylines with corrupt police, pimps, prostitutes' and drug dealers.

In these films, Black woman were often used as sexual props rather than romantic or protagonist leads. In films were the lead was a woman, she was hypersexual and inhabited characteristics of a male superhero. They were extremely attractive and rebels, out to combat street crime and corrupt police. However, most of these films received a rating of X for their super explicit sex scenes. In other movies were Black woman weren't the heroes, they were prostitutes or depicted as sexual animals. Most Black woman who played Jezebel characters in these films were light skinned or brown skinned.
