9 feb 1950 anni - McCarthyism
Descrizione:
Named after Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin, McCarthyism was the idea that anyone that McCarthy did not like or disagreed with was a communist because they lacked his capitalist, American values. In fact, in February of 1950, Senator McCarthy gave a speech claiming that he had a list of "205 communists" within the federal government. Not one of these "communists" were ever identified. McCarthyism was used for three main things: to claim political ground, to degrade opponents in the eyes of the people, and to stir fear within the American people of having actual communist dictators within their government. McCarthyism contributed to the Cold War because it used fear of a potential communist uprising stoked the flames of the Red Scare, where Americans were afraid that even their neighbors of twenty-years were potential communists and were going to overthrow the free-enterprise government. The Red Scare worsened tensions between the U.S. and U.S.S.R.
