This book takes place in 1960's Missisippi Jackson, amidst the Jim Crow era and Civil Rights movement. Stockett writes in the POV of three women, Skeeter, Aibileen and Minny. For Skeeter Stockett uses correct english, but for Aibileen and Minny, the author uses incoherent broken English and writes as if she is a Black woman.

The story of The Help is a pivotal and emotionally driven story, but it does not accurately tell the perspective of a Black woman, yet uses them as a poster for what they assume to be the perspective of a Black woman.
