The Mammy carcature started during the Antebellum period. African Americans were often used as mascots for popular food brands. This along with Uncle Ben's has stayed around until 2020. These mascots served as justifications for keeping African Americans bonded and promoted white supremacy. By appearing as happy on these products, the narrative began to be painted that African Americans were happy and content as slaves and exclusivley working class (the help, Jim Crow).
