During her speech, Berry mentions Hattie McDaniel, as well as other Black actresses, saying that the award is not just for her but for them as well. Berry remains the only African American woman to win an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for the 93 years it has been running.

The character she plays falls in love with a racist jailor who executed her lover. She is not aware of who he is until the end of the film. The film is known for its gutwrenching story, but also for the the extemely graphic sexual content that takes place between Hank and Letiticia.
