The steamboat was invented by Robert Fulton in 1807. This was a very important invention at the time due to the fact that it was more efficient than wind-powered boats and could travel upstream quicker. This helped improve transportation and trade. Another form of transportation that helped with people and cargo traveling was steam engines. Steam engines helped revolutionize transportation across land and water.
Roads/Canals/Railroads:
A canal is a man made waterway, with one of the most famous canals being the Erie canal. The National Road was constructed of tax money from protective tariffs and it ran from east to west. This road was beneficial for the North and upsetting to the South, and helped people move west. From the years of 1830 to 1860 the amount of railroad mileage has increased. In 1830 it started with only 23 miles, and it expanded all the way to 30,626 miles in 1860. The expansion of railroads is important because it opened up the possibility for more markets and expanded our economy.
