The tobacco initiative was started in December 2015 when RISHI's founders Dhiraj Pangal and Kunal Varshneya visited Naga Valadia and conducted extensive surveys with the villagers. This issue was initially found to be prevalent among the men with approximately 90% of the men using some form of tobacco, according to the acting sarpanch (the head of the village). The survey indicated that most of the men used smokeless tobacco mainly in the form of gutka and bidi. Men would gather in certain places to use tobacco and tobacco packets were littered all over the village. Village leaders and some of the villagers interviewed shared with USCPR that tobacco usage was very prevalent in Nagavaladia.
