Around this time, steam-powered locomotives were invented and this became a much more efficient way for people to travel overland.

A canal is an artificial waterway constructed to allow the passage of boats or ships inland or to convey water for irrigation. The Erie Canal is one of the most famous canals; built in 1817.

The National Road was the first major improved highway in the United States built by the federal government. Built between 1811 and 1837, the 620-mile road connected the Potomac and Ohio Rivers and was a main transport path to the West for thousands of settlers.
