The French decided to build a fortress. They wanted it to be massive
and intimidating. It would be a centre for the French fisheries, a major trading
port, and the largest military base in North America. The French chose a
location on present-day Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, as the site for
Fortress Louisbourg. By 1740, there were 2000 people were there.
