After the Nivelle Offensive, which was extremely unsuccessful and cost many lives within the French Army. This is what finally pushed the soldiers over the edge. This combined with the conditions they lived in, trench warfare and all that, brought several soldiers to simply walk away from the front lines. The majority of these men were sentenced to death on the charge of treason. Rumors that continued to grow within the regiments also led to mutiny as the soldiers began to believe they were useless where they were placed on the front lines. This did not really affect the overall war though. Eventually the complaints and instances of mutiny ceased as the war went on.
