The plague depicts a contest between the gods of Egypt and the God of Israel, of which Yahweh was the victor, freeing Israel at the great cost of the people of Egypt.

Reconciling verses where God hardens Pharaoh's heart seemingly despite Pharaoh's has proven challenging for contemporary scholars and readers.
