1 lugl 1916 anni - Battle of the Somme
Descrizione:
An allied offensive for the French and British along the Western Front against Germany that turned out mostly unsuccessful on both sides. Prior to the first day of official battle the was a large bombardment of bombshells on the German lines to hopefully destroy most of the barbed wire and weaken their defensives, however it was only partially effective. The first day began with a full assault on German lines from the British. On this day the British lost 19,000 soldiers and suffered more than 57,000 casualties. This sort of trend continued as more than 1 million soldiers were killed by the end of the battle. It ended with a full British retreat of the offensive. After this battle the British was supplied with vastly more firepower than they've ever had, and it was this firepower that determined the outcome of the war.
