The liberals and the Labour representation Committee formed a secret electoral pact with the Liberal's intention being to avoid losing further ground. In 1903, Gladstone and Macdonalds signed the pact stating that the Liberals agreed to not contest around 50 seats where LRC were stronger than Liberals and were most likely to be defeated by a conservative candidate. Although it was meant to benefit the Liberals, the LRC gained enough parliamentary support that it wouldn't have had otherwise.
