The detected biological sample is brought onboard the Zenith processing and refinery station. The six-member crew retrieves the samples. Vance Astrovik revives a dormant cell from the sample, which quickly grows into a multi-celled organism. They nickname it Bud.
Astrovik realizes that Bud's cells can change their specialization, acting as muscle, neuron, and photosensory cells all at once.

During an experiment by Astrovik, Bud suddenly becomes hostile, wrapping itself around Astrovik's hand and crushing it. Bud then escapes its enclosure and it devours a lab rat, growing in size. Joseph Ledger rescues Astrovik, but Bud grabs onto his leg, prompting station commander John Jameson to lock Ledger in the lab. After Ledger unsuccessfully attempts to fight off Bud, Bud enters his mouth killing him. After several minutes, Bud emerges from Ledger's mouth, larger than before, and escapes the lab through a fire-control vent.

The crew attempts to inform Earth of the situation, but the station's communication system overheats, cutting off contact with Earth. Salia Petrie performs a space walk to find and fix the problem, which turns out to be Bud. Bud attacks Petrie and ruptures her spacesuit. As Petrie makes her way to the airlock, Bud enters her suit and begins the process of absorbing her. When the crew retrieve her from the airlock, she is unconscious, which they believe is due to the rupture.

Bringing Petrie to the med lab, they question their next steps. Unbeknownst to the rest of the crew, Bud attaches to Astrovik and consumes him, leaving an exact replica behind. Petrie meanwhile attacks Andrea Benton, forcing them to kill her with fire. Discovering that all her organs had been replaced by Bud's mass, they realize that Bud can perfectly replicate anyone.

Jameson, Benton, Astrovik, and Terry Hewitt discuss next steps. Astrovik champions returning to Earth, believing that Bud has been killed. Jameson and Benton are against this, as they need to be sure that Bud has hidden parts of himself anywhere, or in anyone. They hide in the command section, seal the doors, and flush the entire station into the void. They then decide to test everyone to ensure they haven't been taken over. Jameson and Benton pass the test, but Astrovik explodes with black mass, killing Hewitt and making for the docked ship on the side of the station. Jameson attempts to manually decouple the ship from command while Benton tries to stop Astrovik personally. They tussle in the bay, until Benton is able to get Astrovik into an airlock and asks Jameson to blow them both into space, which he does.

Jameson then abandons the station, returning on the ship alone to Earth. However, when Astrovik was revealed, Jameson was infected and has been consumed by the black mass.
