Dual-mode locomotives for freight. HTPG Competition is free of catenaries. Until recently, "relay traction", i.e. changing locomotives, was a relative rule for freight trains when moving from an electrified line to a line without catenaries. As most of the branch terminals were not electrified, diesel traction was also needed to access the terminal sites. With the arrival of the new freight operators, this practice was somewhat challenged. The presence of diesel engines under catenary has been increased, as the operators seek to minimize their transport time, even if it means running 80% of the time under catenary. Diesel traction was seen as a facility for new entrants in their start-up period, as it was free from national and international electrical borders.
