The successful mission of Sputnik I caused the U.S Defense Department to fund a US satellite project. In addition, US President, Dwight D. Eisenhower, ordered the Navy to speed up the process of building the Vanguard Satellite. However, it was a fail when launching, as it exploded when only feet off the ground.
