The USSR requested Britain and the USA to open a second front in Western Europe as they were facing the bulk of Hitler's Army without aid. The two instead decided to invade Italy first. These continued delays led to suspicions by many (including Stalin) that the USA and Britain were stalling in order to ensure that the USSR would be seriously weakened by the end of the war. This led to more distrust between the east and west.
