1 feb 1735 anni - Symphony No. 13 in G Major
Descrizione:
One of the earliest freestanding concert symphonies. It is scored for strings with basso continuo and is in four movements, of which all but the tiny second one (a six-measure snatch of chordal connective maaterial) are cast in the expected binary form. The third and fourth movements, respectively a gigue and a minuet, are traditional dance-suite items. Their harmonically defined form offers the usual swing from tonic to dominant and back (the return trip by way of distant tonal areas).
The style of the movements shows an influence from Italian opera in their relatively homophonic texture and their slow and regular harmonic rhythm. As we saw in works by Bach's sons and Domenico Scarlatti, the structural reprise in the second part of the first movement marks a return "home,"meaning not only a returningt key but also a returning theme (Double return!). The double return in works by these composers became the normal procedure for rounding off the opening movement of a symphony. The expanded binary form with dramatized key contrasts and double returns is now known as sonata form.
