This act was the first ever attempt to limit immigration into the United States. The Chinese exclusion act suspended entry of Chinese immigrants for the next ten years. Also the current Chinese immigrants in the US were declared "ineligible for naturalization". Many Chinese workers fought against this in court but were not successful.
