The same day when the U.S. agreed to return Okinawa to Japan, Richard Nixon officially declared the War on Drugs. Drugs were on the rise during this time period, especially among the youth. So it made sense that Nixon wanted to outlaw them. However, in its 50 year existence, the War on Drugs has arguably done more harm than good. The disproportionate incarcerations of African-American males seems to be one of the effects. Due to this, the U.S. has the highest people incarcerated in the world.
